Lucas 2.0 Introductory Announcement


STARTING THE BOOK BLOG WITH A LETTER TO EVERYBODY I KNOW


The book "goes live" on Amazon. Over two years in the writing, editing, cover designing comes to the kick-off time. The letter below was one way for the announcement to go. 

This blog will be another. 

You will be introduced to some of the characters, especially the fully conscious, self aware, anthropomohic, lovable Lucas. He is the answer incarnate to the question, "What would a superintelligence actually do?"

But first, the announcement letter. (In case you didn't get one.)

Dear Everybody,

Another two years, another book. Here I am again, this time hoping to interest you in a sci-fi trip into the near future (2030) with me. It’s one way to escape the harrowing present!

I had an absolute blast writing this. I am super fascinated with the subject. A.I - artificial intelligence - is exploding all around us, and the next stage is superintelligence.  “Super” as in thousands of times more intelligent that thee, me and the rest of humanity, even though we will invent it. More accurately, we will invent a seed, plant it and stand back. It will definitely grow on its own.

We’ve got HAL 9000, SkyNet, Colossus, Berserkers, and Mentats, but something new has raised its head, and it frightens folks like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Nick Bostrom and the late Stephen Hawking. It’s a self-improving artificial intelligence that can make itself super. 

Humanity risks being left in the dust.

Nick Bostrom wrote his seminal book Superintelligence in 2014. I finally read it in 2017. At dinner one night at Farm and Table in Albuquerque and I was having a rare (in both senses) steak and in a fine mood. I waxed excitedly and at length about the coming wonders of superintelligence to my old friend Eric Ober who finally shut me up saying, “You should write a book about it, you are so enthusiastic.”

I write in a loft in the Ponderosa/Pinion/Juniper forests of the mountains east of Albuquerque. This all keeps me a little high. For instance, the two totally fictitious characters in this book, both named Lucas, are some of my favorite people. Now that’s author involvement. (And pandemic isolation.)
